Child Inclusive Mediation
Both parents may have the children's best interests at heart, but they may not always agree on the best way to achieve that. Sometimes, an existing arrangement needs to be adjusted to improve the situation for everyone involved. How can you ensure that everyone's needs and wishes are taken into account?
We offer Child Inclusive Mediation, also known as "direct consultation," with a family mediator who is a trained specialist child consultant. This service is integrated into the mediation process and allows parents the opportunity to understand their children's thoughts, views, and wishes regarding the future of the family.
CAFCASS recommends that children aged 10 and above should generally be offered access to a mediator when issues regarding their future are being resolved in mediation. Children appreciate having their feelings and opinions heard. Siblings can be seen separately or together, depending on their preferences, and younger children may be seen if the mediator deems it appropriate.
During Child Inclusive Mediation, the child speaks confidentially with the mediator. The meeting typically lasts around 45 minutes. If the child has something they would like the parents to consider when making decisions, the mediator will, with the child's permission, share this with the parents during the mediation session. However, it's essential for children to understand that they are not responsible for making any decisions.
If you're considering Child Inclusive Mediation, why not call for a confidential 15-minute consultation with one of our mediators? They'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
